The Pocket Watch – Old Fashioned or Elegant?
Some people consider the idea of a pocket watch as an
old-fashioned answer to the need to keep track of time. Others
recognize an elegant appeal to the pocket watch, probably at least
partly due to its association with an era more commonly remembered as a
time of a slower pace.
Consider, for example, the first idea that comes to the mind of most
people when someone mentions a pocket watch. The train conductors are
often portrayed in movies in a classic pose – standing beside the train
with his pocket watch in hand, preparing for the departure and
apparently taking stock of the time. Trains themselves are often
considered to have a romantic allure. Even people who have never been
aboard a train feel a certain longing as the train rumbles by. Maybe
it’s the fact that rails go on for as far as the eyes can see, or
perhaps it’s the sounds of trains – the whistle of the engine or the
clacking of wheels on the rails. Or it could simply be that we as a
whole have created a series of romantic notions and associated them
with trains. Either way, that image of a train conductor checking his
watch is ingrained in the minds of many whenever they think of the
pocket watch.
That’s probably most of the reason that trains are so often engraved on
the covers of pocket watches. Almost anyone who has seen older pocket
watches or even replicas, has seen the train racing along the cover.
So what was it that made that conductor pull out his pocket watch just
as the train was about to leave the station? It was a desire to keep
the train on time, at least to the best of his ability. It was that
same need that makes us take a quick look at our watches as we wait for
our morning appointments to wind down and make a break for lunch. And
while the idea of a pocket watch is somewhat appealing to our desire
for elegance, it would probably be much more conspicuous than simply
stealing a quick look at a wristwatch.
