The term “replica watch” has different meanings in different
settings. In some cases, a replica is a positive thing and finding a
replica is a good thing. In some cases, a replica is just another term
for fake, and finding out that you’ve purchased a fake instead of the
original is a bad thing.
Consider the many aspects of our lives in which a replica is as close
to the original as we are ever going to get. Antique car restoration is
an all-consuming passion of some people. Finding a particular car, even
one in poor condition, is sometimes not possible because there are only
a limited number of them – or none at all – still in existence. The
hobbyist or collector who really wants that particular model has two
choices. He can move on to some other model, or he can make a replica.
When the replica is finished, it will be one of the few chances there
are to see what that car looked like in living color.
Some watches are the same way. For collectors, the old timepieces may
be very rare or even impossible to find, regardless of condition. In
those cases, crafting a replica watch (or having a jeweler do it) may
be the only chance of owning a watch of that particular model. While
it’s not the original, it does represent the original and can stand in
its place in a collection.
The problem with replicas occurs when someone tries to pass off the
replica as a genuine article. When trying to decide whether the item is
an original or a replica, remember the old saying, “If it sounds too
good to be true, it probably is.” That means an expensive watch,
offered at a fraction of the price by a street vendor, is probably not
a true original. However, in some cases, finding a replica watch that
closely resembles the original might be good enough.
